Which mountain is the highest peak in South Africa?
Answer
Mafadi
Answer
Mafadi
Mafadi is the highest peak in South Africa.
It rises to 3,450 metres (11,319 feet) in the Drakensberg on the border between South Africa and Lesotho. The summit is on the international boundary, while the mountain’s northern and eastern surroundings form part of the dramatic basalt escarpment of the Maloti-Drakensberg region.
Mafadi is sometimes omitted from general mountain lists because nearby Thabana Ntlenyana is higher. Thabana Ntlenyana, at about 3,482 metres, is the highest mountain in Lesotho, but its summit lies on the Lesotho side of the border and therefore does not hold South Africa’s national record.
The name Mafadi is commonly explained as meaning “Mother of Fadi” in local usage. The peak is reached by long hiking routes rather than technical Himalayan-style climbing, but the high plateau can still bring cold, snow and sudden storms.
