Which mountain is the highest peak in Papua New Guinea?

The story behind the answer

Mount Wilhelm is the highest peak in Papua New Guinea, rising to 4,509 metres.

The mountain is part of the Bismarck Range and lies near the meeting point of three provinces: Chimbu, Jiwaka and Madang. It is named after Kaiser Wilhelm II, reflecting the period when the region was part of German New Guinea.

The first recorded ascent occurred in 1938, when a party led by Australian explorer Leigh Vial reached the summit. The route passes through alpine grasslands and tarns before reaching the rugged summit ridge.

Mount Wilhelm is sometimes confused with Mount Giluwe, which is Papua New Guinea’s highest volcanic mountain. Giluwe is a major peak, but its summit is lower than Mount Wilhelm.
