Which mountain is the highest peak in Norway, at 2,469 metres?
Answer
Galdhøpiggen
Answer
Galdhøpiggen
Galdhøpiggen is Norway’s highest mountain, with an elevation of 2,469 metres.
The peak stands in Innlandet county in the Jotunheimen mountain area. Its name combines words associated with the Jotun, or giants, and a peak, and is commonly understood as “the peak of the giants.” The mountain is part of a landscape containing glaciers, high plateaus and several of Norway’s best-known summits.
The first ascent took place in 1850, when Steinar Sulheim, Svale Ødegaard and Ole Steinsbekk reached the summit. Glittertind was once sometimes listed as Norway’s highest mountain because its ice cap made its total elevation vary, but Galdhøpiggen’s rocky summit is higher. Today, Galdhøpiggen is accessible by hiking routes, although glacier crossings and changing weather can still make the climb serious.
