Which mountain is the highest peak in North America, rising to 6,190 metres in Alaska?

The story behind the answer

Denali is the highest peak in North America, rising to 6,190 metres in Alaska.

The mountain is in the Alaska Range, within Denali National Park and Preserve. Its great elevation above the surrounding landscape gives it one of the world’s largest vertical rises from base to summit.

The mountain was officially renamed Denali in 2015, restoring the Koyukon Athabascan name meaning “the tall one.” It had previously been widely known as Mount McKinley, a name still encountered in older books and maps.

Denali is not the highest mountain above sea level globally; that distinction belongs to Mount Everest. However, its prominence and base-to-summit rise make it one of Earth’s most dramatic peaks.
