Which mountain is the highest peak in New Zealand, at 3,724 metres?

The story behind the answer

Aoraki / Mount Cook is New Zealand’s highest mountain, rising to 3,724 metres.

The mountain is in the Southern Alps on New Zealand’s South Island, within Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. It has three principal summits: the Low Peak, the Middle Peak and the High Peak. Its Māori name, Aoraki, is often translated as “cloud piercer,” while the English name honours Captain James Cook.

The mountain’s modern official name recognizes both Māori and English traditions. The first successful ascent was made in 1894 by New Zealanders Tom Fyfe, George Graham and Jack Clarke. Aoraki / Mount Cook is heavily glaciated, and its height was revised in 2014 after improved surveying showed that the summit had lost ice and snow since older measurements. It is a major mountaineering and tourism landmark in New Zealand.
