Which mountain is the highest peak in Japan’s Chūgoku region?

The story behind the answer

Mount Daisen is the highest peak in Japan’s Chūgoku region.

Located in Tottori Prefecture, Mount Daisen reaches 1,729 metres and is part of Daisen-Oki National Park. Its broad volcanic form dominates the skyline of western Honshu.

Daisen has long been associated with mountain worship and the Daisenji temple complex. The mountain’s highest point is generally identified as Kengamine, but erosion has made the summit ridge unstable, so climbers commonly use Misen, which stands at 1,709 metres, as the practical high point.

The mountain is also important for biodiversity and winter recreation. Its slopes support beech forests, alpine vegetation and ski areas, making it a major natural landmark of the San’in region.
