Mount Kosciuszko
Answer
Mount Kosciuszko
Mount Kosciuszko is the highest peak in Australia, standing at 2,228 metres in New South Wales.
The mountain is located in the Snowy Mountains, part of the Great Dividing Range, within Kosciuszko National Park. It is a relatively rounded alpine summit rather than a sharply rugged mountain, and a walking track leads close to the top. The summit area experiences cold winters and is covered by snow for part of the year.
Polish explorer Paweł Edmund Strzelecki named the mountain in 1840 after Polish military and political leader Tadeusz Kościuszko. Earlier surveys gave the name to the neighbouring peak now called Mount Townsend; the names were later exchanged so that Kosciuszko remained attached to the higher summit.
Mount Kosciuszko is distinct from Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain on the Australian continental plate.
