Which mountain is the highest active volcano in the world, rising to 6,893 metres on the Chile–Argentina border?

The story behind the answer

Ojos del Salado is the highest active volcano in the world, rising to 6,893 metres on the Chile–Argentina border.

The volcano is part of the Andes and lies in the Atacama region, one of the driest environments on Earth. Its summit is divided between Chile and Argentina, and the upper slopes are dominated by volcanic rock, snow patches and high-altitude desert conditions.

Ojos del Salado is considered active because it has displayed relatively recent volcanic activity, including fumaroles and hot springs. Its last known eruption is generally placed in the Holocene, although the exact date and nature of that activity are uncertain.

The mountain is also South America’s second-highest summit after Aconcagua. It is frequently confused with Llullaillaco, another very high Andean volcano, but Ojos del Salado is higher and holds the global altitude record for active volcanoes.
