Which mountain is Spain’s highest peak, located on Tenerife in the Canary Islands?

The story behind the answer

Mount Teide is Spain’s highest peak, rising to 3,715 metres on Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Teide is a volcanic mountain formed within Las Cañadas caldera. It is also the highest point above sea level in the Atlantic islands and one of the world’s highest volcanoes when measured from the ocean floor. Its summit is surrounded by a striking high-altitude volcanic landscape.

The mountain is part of Teide National Park, established in 1954. The park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 because of its geological importance and unusual volcanic ecosystems. A cable car carries visitors to a point below the summit, but a permit is required to reach the crater area.

Mount Teide is an active, though currently dormant, volcanic system. It is sometimes confused with Mulhacén, which is the highest mountain on Spain’s mainland, not in the entire country.
