Which mountain is farthest from Earth’s centre because of the planet’s equatorial bulge?

The story behind the answer

Chimborazo is the mountain farthest from Earth’s centre because of the planet’s equatorial bulge.

Chimborazo is an inactive stratovolcano in Ecuador’s Andes, rising to 6,263 metres above sea level. Although Mount Everest is much higher above sea level, Earth is not a perfect sphere: it bulges outward around the equator because of its rotation. Chimborazo lies very close to the equator, so its summit is farther from Earth’s centre than any other mountain summit.

Measurements place Chimborazo’s summit more than 2 kilometres farther from Earth’s centre than Everest’s summit. This does not make Chimborazo the highest mountain above sea level; Everest retains that distinction. The answer depends on the reference point used for measuring elevation.

Chimborazo is also Ecuador’s highest mountain. Its summit is covered by glaciers, although warming temperatures have reduced the extent of the ice. The mountain forms part of the Cordillera Occidental of the Ecuadorian Andes and is a prominent landmark near the city of Riobamba.
