Which mountain is Africa’s highest peak, rising to 5,895 metres in Tanzania?
Answer
Mount Kilimanjaro
Answer
Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak, rising to 5,895 metres in Tanzania.
It is a dormant stratovolcano in Kilimanjaro Region, near the Kenya–Tanzania border. The mountain has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Kibo is the highest and contains Uhuru Peak, the summit commonly intended when people refer to climbing Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro is famous for its remarkable ecological zones. Climbers pass through cultivated foothills, rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and an icy summit zone. Its glaciers have shrunk substantially over the past century, making it an important example in discussions of climate change.
The mountain is often confused with Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak. Kilimanjaro is also unusual among the world’s tallest mountains because many visitors can reach its summit without technical climbing equipment, although altitude remains a serious hazard.
