Which mountain has the highest summit above sea level?
Answer
Mount Everest
Answer
Mount Everest
Mount Everest has the highest summit above sea level, at 8,848.86 metres.
The mountain stands in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. Nepal commonly calls it Sagarmatha, while Tibetans call it Chomolungma. The English name honours George Everest, a former Surveyor General of India, although he never visited the mountain.
A joint Nepal–China measurement announced in 2020 gave the summit elevation as 8,848.86 metres, including its snow and ice cap. Earlier measurements differed slightly because surveying methods and assumptions about the summit snow varied.
Everest is not the tallest mountain under every possible measurement. Mauna Kea rises higher from its underwater base to its summit, and Chimborazo’s summit is farther from Earth’s centre because of the planet’s equatorial bulge. Everest is specifically the highest point above mean sea level.
