In which country is Angkor Wat located?

The story behind the answer

Angkor Wat is located in Cambodia.

Angkor Wat is a monumental temple complex near Siem Reap in northwestern Cambodia. It was built in the early twelfth century during the reign of King Suryavarman II, when the Khmer Empire controlled much of mainland Southeast Asia. The temple was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu.

The complex is famous for its towers, galleries, bas-reliefs, and enormous moat. Its central quincunx of towers is often interpreted as representing Mount Meru, the sacred mountain of Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. Later, Angkor Wat became an important Buddhist site, helping explain the mixture of religious traditions visible today.

Angkor Wat is part of the wider Angkor archaeological park, which includes monuments such as Bayon and Ta Prohm. It appears on Cambodia’s national flag and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, while the modern city of Siem Reap serves as the principal gateway for visitors.
