Which Motown group sang "My Girl"?
Answer
The Temptations
Answer
The Temptations
The Motown group that sang “My Girl” is the Temptations.
The Temptations recorded “My Girl” in 1964 for Motown’s Gordy label, with David Ruffin singing the lead vocal. Smokey Robinson and fellow Miracles member Ronald White wrote and produced the song. Robinson had originally considered having the Miracles record it, but chose the Temptations after hearing Ruffin’s distinctive voice.
Released on December 21, 1964, “My Girl” became the Temptations’ first US number-one single and their signature song. Its memorable opening bass line was played by Motown bassist James Jamerson, while Robert White of the Funk Brothers played the introductory guitar riff. The song appeared on the 1965 album The Temptations Sing Smokey.
A common mix-up is crediting Smokey Robinson as the performer because he wrote the song. He and the Miracles were associated with it, but the famous original hit recording belongs to the Temptations. “My Girl” entered the National Recording Registry in 2017.
