Which motorcycle won the 1988 Superbike World Championship for Fred Merkel?

The story behind the answer

The Honda RC30 won the 1988 Superbike World Championship for Fred Merkel.

The RC30 is the common name for Honda’s VFR750R, a limited-production homologation motorcycle based on Honda’s racing technology. It used a 748 cc liquid-cooled V4 engine, gear-driven camshafts and a single-sided swingarm.

Honda produced the road motorcycle so it could meet racing homologation requirements. Its compact V4, lightweight construction and close connection to Honda’s factory racing machines made it highly competitive in the newly established championship.

Fred Merkel won the 1988 title on an RC30 and later became the championship’s first three-time rider champion. The RC30 is often confused with the later RC45, which also used a V4 layout but belonged to a different generation of Honda superbike racing machinery.
