The Yamaha TZR250 was the first Yamaha production model to use the company's Deltabox frame.
Yamaha introduced the TZR250 in 1986 as a lightweight, fully faired two-stroke sport motorcycle. Its aluminum Deltabox frame was derived from racing development and provided a rigid structure around the compact engine. The design later became strongly associated with Yamaha's larger FZR and YZF sport motorcycles.
The TZR250 should not be confused with Yamaha's racing TZ250, which was a separate Grand Prix-derived competition machine. Nor was the Deltabox frame first introduced on the YZF-R1; the R1 arrived much later, in 1998, after the frame concept had already become an important part of Yamaha's road-bike engineering.
