Which motorcycle was the first to use Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission in production?
Answer
Honda VFR1200F
Answer
Honda VFR1200F
The Honda VFR1200F was the first production motorcycle to use Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission.
Honda introduced the VFR1200F for the 2010 model year. Its optional Dual Clutch Transmission used two clutches: one managed the odd-numbered gears and the other managed the even-numbered gears. This arrangement allowed the next gear to be selected before the shift, reducing interruption in power delivery.
The system could operate automatically or let the rider select gears electronically. It differed from a traditional automatic transmission because it retained a geared motorcycle transmission rather than using a continuously variable belt system.
Honda later fitted DCT to models such as the NC700 series, Africa Twin, and Gold Wing. Those later applications are more familiar to many riders, but the VFR1200F was the production debut. The motorcycle itself remained a V4 sport-tourer, connecting Honda’s long-running VFR engineering with the new transmission technology.
