The BMW R1100RS was the first production motorcycle to use BMW's Telelever front suspension.
Introduced in 1993, the R1100RS used BMW's new oilhead boxer engine and a front suspension system in which a wishbone and central shock absorber handled braking and suspension forces. The arrangement separated much of the braking load from fork compression, helping maintain geometry under hard braking.
BMW later fitted Telelever to several touring and adventure models, where stability and comfort were major priorities. The system is distinct from a conventional telescopic fork and from BMW's earlier leading-link designs.
The R1100RS is sometimes confused with the R1100GS because both arrived during BMW's oilhead transition. The GS adopted Telelever shortly afterward, but the R1100RS introduced the production system.
