Which motorcycle was the first Harley-Davidson model to carry the Fat Boy name?

The story behind the answer

The original Harley-Davidson Fat Boy was the first motorcycle to carry the Fat Boy name.

Harley-Davidson introduced the Fat Boy for the 1990 model year. It was built on the Softail platform and became recognizable for its solid-cast wheels, broad front end and distinctive combination of polished and satin-finished metal.

The design was created by Willie G. Davidson and Louie Netz. The motorcycle used Harley-Davidson’s large-displacement V-twin architecture and presented a substantial custom-cruiser appearance while concealing the rear suspension beneath the frame, as other Softail models did.

The Fat Boy is sometimes mixed up with the Heritage Softail or Softail Springer because all were prominent Softail-era cruisers. However, those were separate models with different styling and equipment. The Fat Boy name later appeared in multiple engine generations and special editions.
