Which motorcycle brought Suzuki’s Grand Prix square-four engine to the road in 1985?

The story behind the answer

The Suzuki RG500 Gamma brought Suzuki’s Grand Prix square-four engine concept to the road in 1985.

Suzuki launched the RG500 Gamma as a limited-production two-stroke sport motorcycle closely inspired by its factory 500cc Grand Prix racers. Its engine used a square-four layout, with two crankshafts geared together.

The road bike also adopted racing-influenced construction, including an aluminum frame and a competitive power-to-weight design. It was sold in several markets and became one of the best-known replicas of the 1980s two-stroke era.

The RG500 Gamma is commonly compared with Yamaha’s RZV500R and Honda’s NS400R. Those motorcycles were also two-stroke replicas, but they used different engine layouts and displacements.
