Which motorcycle became the first factory-built road-legal MotoGP replica when Ducati released it in 2007?

The story behind the answer

The Ducati Desmosedici RR became the first factory-built road-legal MotoGP replica when Ducati released it in 2007.

The Desmosedici RR was derived from Ducati’s Desmosedici Grand Prix racing technology. It used a 989 cc V4 engine, a configuration unusual for Ducati’s road range, which was traditionally associated with V-twin motorcycles. The machine was produced in limited numbers and sold as an extremely expensive, high-specification road bike.

Its connection to MotoGP was more direct than that of ordinary homologation sport bikes: the design and engine architecture visibly reflected Ducati’s contemporary Grand Prix prototype. It was road legal, but its maintenance demands and price placed it far outside the normal mass-market motorcycle category.

The Desmosedici RR is sometimes confused with Ducati’s 999R or Panigale R, which were racing-derived production motorcycles but not the same MotoGP replica.
