Which Moroccan city contains the Koutoubia Mosque?
Answer
Marrakesh
Answer
Marrakesh
The Moroccan city containing the Koutoubia Mosque is Marrakesh.
The Koutoubia, also spelled Kutubiyya, is Marrakesh’s largest mosque and one of its defining landmarks. It stands near Jemaa el-Fnaa, the city’s historic market square, in the southwest part of the medina.
The Almohad caliph Abd al-Mu’min founded the first mosque on the site after conquering Marrakesh in 1147. A second structure was built in the mid-12th century, and the mosque’s celebrated minaret was completed under Ya’qub al-Mansur around the late 12th century. The minaret rises about 77 metres.
The name comes from the Arabic word for booksellers, reflecting the presence of a historic book market nearby. Marrakesh is sometimes written Marrakech, but both forms refer to the same Moroccan city. The Koutoubia should not be confused with the Kasbah Mosque, another important historic mosque in Marrakesh.
