The Putra Mosque in Kuala Lumpur’s administrative city of Putrajaya is famous for its pink granite dome and minarets.
Completed in 1999, the mosque stands beside Putrajaya Lake near the Perdana Putra government complex. Its exterior uses rose-tinted granite, giving the dome and much of the building a distinctive pink appearance. The design combines modern construction with references to Persian, Arab, and Moorish architectural traditions.
The mosque’s main dome rises above the prayer hall, while its minaret is organized into several ornamental tiers. The interior includes carved and decorated surfaces, but the building’s overall composition is monumental and symmetrical rather than a reconstruction of one historical mosque.
Putra Mosque is frequently confused with Malaysia’s National Mosque, or Masjid Negara, in Kuala Lumpur. Masjid Negara is an earlier building, completed in 1965, and has a distinctive folded-umbrella roof rather than a pink dome.
