The F103 was developed by Auto Union as a successor to the DKW F102. It retained the earlier car’s front-wheel-drive layout but replaced its troublesome two-stroke engine with a new four-stroke four-cylinder unit. The change helped Auto Union present the car under the Audi name, which had not been used on a production car for decades.

When launched in September 1965, the car was initially sold simply as the Auto Union “Audi”; later versions received numerical names such as Audi 60, Audi 72, Audi 75, Audi 80 and Audi Super 90. “F103” is the internal model designation for the whole series, not just one trim level.
