Cartman, Kyle, Stan and Kenny become intensely absorbed in the game after a powerful player repeatedly kills their characters. They eventually train for months in-game to defeat him, turning a familiar online-gaming grievance into an exaggerated epic quest.

World of Warcraft was developed and operated by Blizzard Entertainment, whose cooperation helped South Park create the episode’s machinima sequences. Blizzard supplied character models and access to an alpha server for The Burning Crusade. The episode’s fictional Sword of a Thousand Truths was later referenced in the game’s beta testing.

The episode is sometimes confused with other MMORPGs such as RuneScape or EverQuest because South Park is parodying online gaming broadly.
