Apollo 11 carried the first humans to land on the Moon in July 1969.
NASA launched Apollo 11 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 16, 1969. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility on July 20. Command module pilot Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard Columbia.
Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface, followed shortly by Aldrin. The astronauts spent about 21 hours on the Moon and collected lunar rocks and soil before returning safely to Earth on July 24.
Apollo 8 had previously carried humans around the Moon but did not land there. Apollo 12 achieved the second crewed lunar landing later in 1969, which is why those missions are important but are not the answer to this question.
