The Qutb Minar in Delhi was begun by Qutb-ud-din Aibak in 1199.

Aibak, founder of the Delhi Sultanate’s Mamluk or Slave dynasty, began the first storey of the minaret after establishing rule in northern India. His successor, Shams-ud-din Iltutmish, added three more storeys, while later repairs and alterations followed damage from earthquakes and lightning.

The tower is built mainly of red sandstone and is decorated with projecting balconies, fluting, and bands of inscriptions. It tapers upward and now stands about 72.5 metres high, making it one of India’s most recognizable medieval monuments.

The Qutb Minar is part of the Qutb complex, which also contains the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque and the Iron Pillar. It should not be confused with the unfinished Alai Minar, begun nearby centuries later.
