Which Mexican cave is famous for some of the largest natural crystals ever found?
Answer
Cave of the Crystals
Answer
Cave of the Crystals
The Mexican cave famous for some of the largest natural crystals ever found is the Cave of the Crystals.
The chamber lies about 300 meters underground in the Naica Mine, near Naica in Chihuahua. Its enormous crystals are made of selenite, a transparent variety of gypsum. The largest known crystal measures about 11.4 meters long and weighs an estimated 12 tonnes.
Miners discovered the chamber in April 2000 while excavating a new tunnel. The cave formed in limestone under unusual hydrothermal conditions: mineral-rich hot water gradually cooled, allowing gypsum crystals to grow for hundreds of thousands of years. The process was exceptionally slow and stable.
The cave is not an ordinary tourist cavern. Temperatures can reach about 58°C, with humidity between 90% and 99%, making unprotected visits dangerous and brief. It was also flooded again after mine pumping stopped in 2015. The Cave of Swords, another Naica chamber, contains impressive crystals too, but they are much smaller.
