Which cave chamber in Malaysia is often cited as the world's largest by floor area?
Answer
Sarawak Chamber
Answer
Sarawak Chamber
Malaysia’s Sarawak Chamber is often cited as the world’s largest cave chamber by floor area.
The chamber lies inside Gua Nasib Bagus, or Good Luck Cave, in Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak on Borneo. Laser surveying has measured its floor area at roughly 164,459 square meters, although published figures vary with surveying methods and definitions of the chamber’s boundaries.
A British caving team discovered the chamber during the 1981 Mulu’80 Expedition. It is approximately 600 meters long and 435 meters wide, with a roof rising more than 100 meters above parts of its uneven floor. Underground rivers and the erosion of limestone helped create the enormous cavern.
The key qualification is “by floor area.” China’s Miao Room is generally identified as larger by volume, so claims that Sarawak Chamber is simply the world’s largest cave can be misleading. It is also distinct from the larger cave system of Gunung Mulu National Park as a whole.
