Which Antarctic volcano is the southernmost active volcano on Earth? Mount Erebus.
Mount Erebus is the southernmost active volcano on Earth. It stands on Ross Island in Antarctica and rises to about 3,792 metres. The volcano is part of the McMurdo Volcanic Group and is the highest point on Ross Island.
Erebus is scientifically notable for its persistent phonolitic lava lake, one of only a small number of long-lived lava lakes known on Earth. Its typical activity is Strombolian: bursts of gas and molten rock occur from the lava lake or nearby vents. The volcano’s continuing activity is especially accessible to scientists because McMurdo Station and Scott Base are roughly 35 kilometres away.
Captain James Clark Ross named the mountain in 1841 after his ship, HMS Erebus. Mount Terror, another Ross Island volcano, is nearby but inactive, making it a common distractor. Deception Island and Mount Melbourne are also Antarctic volcanic sites, but neither holds the title of the southernmost active volcano.
