Which Mexican bank has served as the country's central bank since 1925?

The Bank of Mexico has served as Mexico's central bank since 1925.

It was established on 1 September 1925 during the administration of President Plutarco Elías Calles. The institution was created to provide a unified authority for currency issuance and monetary management after years of financial and political instability following the Mexican Revolution.

The Bank of Mexico, commonly called Banxico, is responsible for issuing banknotes, conducting monetary policy, managing international reserves and promoting the sound functioning of payment systems. A constitutional reform in 1993 granted it autonomy, and that autonomy took effect in April 1994. Its primary objective is to preserve the purchasing power of the currency.

The Bank of Mexico is different from Banco Nacional de México, often called Banamex, which is a commercial bank. Mexico's currency is the Mexican peso, and the central bank's policy decisions are made by its five-member Governing Board.
