Which Spanish bank traces its history to 1857 and is headquartered in Santander?

The story behind the answer

Banco Santander traces its history to 1857 and is headquartered in Santander, Spain.

The institution began as the Banco de Santander, founded on 15 May 1857 by royal decree to support commerce between the port of Santander and Latin America. It initially served businesses involved in overseas trade and gradually expanded through Spain’s economic development.

Santander grew substantially through mergers and international acquisitions. A major turning point came in 1999, when Banco Santander merged with Banco Central Hispano, creating Banco Santander Central Hispano. The bank later adopted the shorter Santander name and built major operations across Europe and the Americas.

It is a commercial banking group rather than Spain’s central bank. Spain’s central bank is Banco de España, which also participates in the European Central Bank system.
