Flea was the Red Hot Chili Peppers member who performed completely naked at the 1999 Woodstock concert. The bassist walked onto the stage during the band’s set and jumped around while exposing himself to the crowd, making the moment one of Woodstock ’99’s most widely remembered incidents.
Woodstock ’99 took place from July 22 to 25, 1999, at a former air base in Rome, New York. The festival was intended to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original 1969 Woodstock, but it became notorious for overcrowding, poor sanitation, high prices, heat, and outbreaks of violence. The Red Hot Chili Peppers performed on the final night, July 25.
Flea is the group’s longtime bassist and one of its founding members. He is sometimes confused with singer Anthony Kiedis because Kiedis was the band’s most visible frontman, but the naked stage appearance was Flea’s. The performance is also occasionally misremembered as taking place at the original 1969 Woodstock; it happened three decades later at Woodstock ’99.
