Which member of Nirvana was injured during the 1992 "MTV Video Music Awards"?

The story behind the answer

Krist Novoselic was the Nirvana member injured during the band’s performance at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. Near the end of “Lithium,” the bassist tossed his instrument into the air, but the bass came down and struck him in the head.

The incident happened on September 9, 1992, at the Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles. Novoselic was knocked to the stage and appeared briefly stunned before leaving. The accident became one of the night’s most memorable moments, although the performance itself was also notable for Nirvana’s rebellious staging and the band’s tense relationship with MTV.

Nirvana performed “Lithium” after MTV objected to the band’s preferred choice, “Rape Me.” Kurt Cobain played a brief fragment of that song before the band moved into “Lithium,” and the group later damaged equipment onstage. Nirvana won two awards that evening: Best New Artist in a Video and Best Alternative Video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The injury is sometimes misdescribed as a guitar accident; Novoselic played bass, not guitar.
