Which medieval military order had Jacques de Molay as its last grand master?
Answer
Knights Templar
Answer
Knights Templar
The Knights Templar had Jacques de Molay as its last grand master.
Jacques de Molay became grand master of the Templars around 1292, when the order was under pressure after Christian forces lost their remaining strongholds in the Holy Land. The Templars had originally been founded in Jerusalem around 1119 to protect pilgrims, and they later became a wealthy international religious and military organization.
King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of Templars in October 1307. Members were accused of heresy and other crimes, but historians generally view the proceedings as politically motivated and connected to Philip’s financial problems. Pope Clement V suppressed the order in 1312.
De Molay was executed in Paris in 1314. Later stories claim that he cursed Philip and Clement, but the famous curse narrative is not securely supported by contemporary evidence. The Templars’ property and legacy were handled differently across Europe, and many former members joined other institutions.
