Jean Froissart wrote the famous Chronicles describing knights, nobles, and the Hundred Years’ War.
Froissart was a 14th-century poet and chronicler from the Low Countries who wrote in French. His Chronicles cover events from roughly 1322 to 1400, including battles, tournaments, royal politics, and aristocratic life in England, France, and neighboring regions.
He traveled among courts and interviewed participants or people connected to major events. His vivid descriptions made the work one of the best-known narrative sources for the age of chivalry, although modern historians assess each account carefully.
Froissart celebrated noble warfare and courtly ideals, but his work is not a neutral modern history. Some details may be based on reports gathered long after events, and his focus on elites leaves ordinary soldiers and civilians less visible.
