Which medieval battle in 1302 became known for Flemish infantry defeating French knights?
Answer
Battle of the Golden Spurs
Answer
Battle of the Golden Spurs
The Battle of the Golden Spurs was the 1302 battle in which Flemish infantry defeated French knights near Courtrai.
The conflict grew from a revolt in the county of Flanders against French rule. On 11 July 1302, a largely infantry army from the Flemish towns confronted a French force that included many mounted nobles and knights.
The Flemish fighters used defensive positions, water-filled ditches, and disciplined formations to blunt the cavalry attack. After the French knights were thrown into disorder, the Flemish captured large numbers of gilt spurs from the fallen nobles, giving the battle its famous name.
The victory became a powerful symbol of urban and regional resistance. It did not permanently end French influence in Flanders: France defeated the Flemish at the Battle of Mons-en-Pévèle in 1304, but the 1302 result remained an important example of infantry overcoming elite cavalry.
