AT&T acquired Time Warner in 2018 for about $85 billion, creating WarnerMedia.
Time Warner was a major media and entertainment company whose businesses included Warner Bros., HBO, and Turner Broadcasting System. It had previously been known as AOL Time Warner after its 2001 merger with AOL, but changed its name back to Time Warner in 2003.
AT&T announced its agreement to purchase Time Warner in 2016. The United States Department of Justice challenged the transaction, but a federal judge approved it in June 2018. AT&T completed the acquisition on June 14, 2018, in a deal valued at approximately $85 billion.
AT&T renamed the acquired company WarnerMedia. In 2022, WarnerMedia was combined with Discovery, Inc. to form Warner Bros. Discovery, so the AT&T-era corporate name is now historical rather than current.
