Which medal did the U.S. government award Georgia O'Keeffe in 1977?

The story behind the answer

The U.S. government awarded Georgia O'Keeffe the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the United States' highest civilian honor. It recognizes people who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the country, world peace, culture, or other significant public or private endeavors.

O'Keeffe received the medal during the presidency of Gerald Ford. The award recognized her major contribution to American art and her influential role in the development of modernism in the United States. By 1977, she was already widely regarded as one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century.

O'Keeffe also received the National Medal of Arts in 1985, so the two honors are easy to confuse. The 1977 award was the Presidential Medal of Freedom; the National Medal of Arts came later.
