“I'm Lovin' It” became McDonald's first global advertising tagline when it was introduced in 2003.
The campaign was launched internationally with the phrase “i’m lovin’ it,” using a lowercase visual style and a short musical hook. It was designed to give McDonald’s a single adaptable message across many countries and languages while retaining the English slogan in the core branding.
The campaign’s music was associated with German singer Justin Timberlake, who appeared in an early commercial, and with producer Pharrell Williams. The slogan and “ba da ba ba ba” mnemonic became closely linked to McDonald’s worldwide identity.
Earlier McDonald’s campaigns were highly influential but were not global taglines in the same coordinated sense. “You Deserve a Break Today” was a major American campaign from 1971, whereas “I’m Lovin’ It” was built for international rollout.
