The Big Mac was launched in 1968 and became a major part of McDonald’s branding.
The sandwich was created by Jim Delligatti, a McDonald’s franchisee in the Pittsburgh area. It used two beef patties, a middle bun section, cheese, lettuce, pickles, onions, and Big Mac sauce. Its distinctive three-part bun and memorable name made it easy to recognize in advertising and menus.
The Big Mac’s identity was strengthened by the advertising jingle that described its ingredients. That kind of mnemonic branding helped turn a menu item into a cultural reference rather than merely another hamburger.
The Big Mac should not be confused with the Quarter Pounder, which is defined by its patty weight before cooking. The Big Mac’s defining branding feature is its stacked construction and signature sauce, not a quarter-pound measurement.
