The Big Mac gave McDonald’s its name for the fictional McDonaldland police officer, Officer Big Mac.
The Big Mac is a hamburger with two beef patties, a middle bun layer, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and Big Mac sauce. Introduced nationally in 1968, it quickly became one of McDonald’s signature products and a major part of the company’s menu identity.
McDonaldland advertising transformed the sandwich name into the character Officer Big Mac. He was designed as a law-enforcement figure within the fictional setting, with a large Big Mac-shaped head. This branding approach turned menu items into memorable characters rather than leaving them as ordinary product names.
Officer Big Mac is distinct from Mayor McCheese, whose head is also food-shaped, and from the Hamburglar, whose role centered on stealing hamburgers. The shared “Big Mac” name is the direct link between the sandwich and the officer character.
