Big Mac became a registered McDonald’s trademark after the product was introduced in 1968.
The Big Mac was created by franchisee Jim Delligatti and added to McDonald’s menu in 1968. Its name quickly became one of the company’s most valuable product brands, supported by distinctive packaging, advertising, and the sandwich’s signature three-part bun.
The sandwich’s branding also helped McDonald’s create a product that could be recognized independently of the restaurant name. Its special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and sesame-seed bun became part of the public description associated with the name.
The Big Mac should not be confused with the Quarter Pounder, another major McDonald’s product brand. The two sandwiches were introduced in different periods and used different naming ideas.
