The Big Mac inspired the name of McDonald’s 1970s character Officer Big Mac.
Officer Big Mac was part of McDonaldland, the fictional advertising world created to give McDonald’s a cast of recurring personalities. His name linked him directly to the Big Mac, one of the company’s most recognizable products, while his uniform and law-enforcement role gave him a distinct identity from the other characters.
McDonald’s often built its character names around menu items. Mayor McCheese represented a cheeseburger, and Captain Crook was associated with the Filet-O-Fish. This product-to-character system helped children connect the imaginary world with the restaurant’s actual menu.
Officer Big Mac is not the same character as the Hamburglar, even though both appeared in McDonaldland stories involving rule-breaking or pursuit. The Hamburglar was a mischievous thief, while Officer Big Mac served as an authority figure. The shared setting and food-based names are the main reasons the characters are sometimes mixed up.
