Grimace was the McDonald's mascot designed to resemble a purple blob and introduced in 1971.
Grimace first appeared during the expansion of McDonaldland, but his early form differed from the friendly character most people remember. The original version was associated with multiple milkshake cups and had a more mischievous appearance. McDonald's later simplified the design into a large, purple, gentle-looking character with a much broader appeal.
The character's changing design is a common source of confusion. Grimace was not the company's original mascot; Speedee held that earlier role. He was also not a breakfast figure like Birdie the Early Bird. His enduring identity comes from the purple color, rounded shape, and close association with Ronald McDonald and the McDonaldland cast.
