Grimace was created as a large purple McDonald’s mascot and first appeared in 1971.
The character’s earliest version was described as having multiple arms and a more mischievous connection to milkshakes. McDonald’s later simplified Grimace into the large, friendly, purple figure most audiences recognize, with a rounded body, short limbs, and a gentle personality.
Grimace became part of McDonaldland alongside Ronald McDonald and other advertising characters. His design was deliberately less literal than characters such as the Hamburglar: he did not represent a particular menu item, but his large shape and bright color made him highly visible in commercials, store displays, and merchandise.
A frequent mistake is placing Grimace’s debut in the 1980s because later versions were especially prominent in children’s promotions. The character’s recorded introduction dates to 1971, during the period when McDonald’s was expanding its fictional McDonaldland universe.
