Ronald McDonald appeared in a 1963 television commercial before the McDonaldland characters became a larger group.
Ronald was introduced as a clown-like spokesman who could connect McDonald’s with children and family entertainment. His earliest commercial appearances helped establish a character-led advertising style that later expanded into the fictional McDonaldland setting.
The distinction matters because McDonald’s used several generations of mascots. Speedee represented the company’s original fast-service identity, while Ronald became the central figure of its family-oriented advertising. Grimace, the Hamburglar, and other characters were added afterward to create a broader cast.
Ronald’s design and supporting cast changed over time, but the character remained identifiable through his red hair, clown makeup, and yellow clothing. His 1963 debut is therefore a useful landmark in the history of McDonald’s branding.
