The Golden Arches logo feature was inspired by McDonald's original yellow architectural arches.
Early McDonald's restaurants used large yellow arches as visible parts of their building designs. The arches helped restaurants stand out from the roadside and became a recognizable architectural signature before they were turned into a compact corporate symbol.
In 1962, designer Jim Schindler combined the two arch shapes into the familiar stylized M. That change allowed the arches to work independently of the restaurant buildings, appearing on signs, packaging, advertisements, and employee materials.
The term “Golden Arches” refers both to the physical architectural elements and to the logo derived from them. It is not the name of McDonald's original mascot or a menu product. Speedee was the earlier chef character, while the arches became the company's dominant visual mark.
