Red forms the background of the classic McDonald’s red-and-yellow roadside sign.
McDonald’s traditionally paired a red field with bright yellow Golden Arches. The strong contrast made the sign easy to recognize from a distance, an important advantage for restaurants located along roads and near drive-in traffic.
Yellow was already associated with the arches as architectural elements, while red became the dominant background color in much of the company’s classic signage and packaging. Together, the colors created a visual identity that remained recognizable even when viewers could not read the restaurant name.
Modern McDonald’s locations may use additional colors and more restrained architectural palettes, especially in urban or environmentally themed designs. Those variations do not change the classic branding association: the familiar roadside sign uses yellow arches against red. The color pairing is therefore a branding fact, not a claim that every current restaurant uses identical exterior signage.
