Which McDonald's character was the first to appear in the McDonaldland advertising universe?

Ronald McDonald was the first character to appear in the McDonaldland advertising universe.

He debuted in 1963 in McDonald's television advertising and later became the central figure of the wider McDonaldland cast. His clown design linked the restaurant chain to family entertainment and gave McDonald's a mascot that could appear consistently across commercials and promotional material.

The other famous McDonaldland figures arrived later or became prominent as the fictional world expanded. The Hamburglar, Grimace, and Mayor McCheese are therefore not the first McDonaldland character, even though they are strongly associated with the campaign.
